Thanks to Grant, New Books Arrive at the Dutton Public Library
By Jean Harman

Books_general_book_stockphotoThanks to a Libri Foundation Grant, the Dutton Public Library now has $1,410.00 worth of juvenile fiction, junior high fiction as well as non fiction books. The non fiction books are in the Math and Science category.  The Library applied for the grant in April. Once the library heard the grant had been awarded, the books were ordered, and with the order went a check for $350 donated by the Friends of the Library.  That is a pretty inexpensive set of books at that price!

Library Hours are Monday  4- 7:30 p.m., Tuesday & Wednesday 1:30 to 8 p.m.; Thursday & Friday 1:30 - 5 p.m. The Library is closed on Holidays and Weekends. The Library’s e-mail address is: dutlibry@mt.net.

University Taking Proposals for Ownership/Management of Dutton Country Courier

by Courtney Lowery

It's time for the Dutton Country Courier to take flight.

The aim with this project has always been to hand the Courier over to someone or some organization that could keep it running in the community. The goal was to give the site a head start with my help and the help of the students and then find someone to sustain the project long-term. Now is the time for that transition to take place.

The site has largely been maintained by me over the past year, but a majority of the stories have come from you. A special thanks is in order to those of you who regularly kept the site up, including Cheri Goss and the Mayor's office, Janet Goodell with community news and Colleen Campbell with school news.

No matter who takes the site over, I hope all of you will continue to contribute and be a part of this project.

Our goal has always been for the site grow into a news hub both for the community and by the community and so the criteria for proposals reflects that sentiment.

You can download the information here on the call for proposals or read on for the memo from the School of Journalism:

Introducing the Dutton Civic Club
submitted by Frank & Marie Loch

We have all heard about best kept secrets or hidden gems.  Well, the Dutton community has one of those in their midst.  It is called the Dutton Civic Club.

It began in the 1930’s as the Dutton Lions Club.  Civic Club was born out of a small rural community organization which over time did not  find a good fit with an International organization due to continual increase in dues, per capita etc.  So in 2001 the members decided that there was still an existing need for a service organization to meet the needs of the community and carry on the legacy of  what the Lions club had accomplished through the years.

Pine Beetle in Teton County: What to Watch For

by Teton County Extension Agent Mark B. Major
for the Dutton Country Courier

There has certainly been much discussion about pine trees in Teton County as of late.  After the Great Falls Tribune released an article on mountain pine beetles in September, I have had several calls regarding this problem.  Mountain pine beetles have been found in pines across Teton County.  Primary hosts for this insect are scotch, lodgepole, ponderosa, and limber pines.  The classic sign of this insect are “pitch tubes” or “popcorn” that extend out from the main trunk.  These tubes are about the size of your pinkie and about the same length.  Most of the trees I have seen have 12-30 pitch tubes on one tree.

The History Committee Needs Stories and Photos for Dutton/Collins History Book

submitted by Dave Klette
Dutton Country Courier

The history committee has been meeting once a week, pouring over our mailing lists in hopes no one is missed for our Dutton-Collins history book.  We do want everyone to be included in the book to be published.  If your family, past or present, from the Dutton or Collins area has not been contacted please send a family history to one of the following members.

Verna Schlueter, 15 1st Ave NE, Dutton MT  59433, phone: 476-3445
Cathy Odden, 1460  18th Lane NE, Dutton, 463-2410
Jack Becker,  25 Main ST. W, Dutton, 476-3213
Dave Klette, 1710 16th Lane NE, Dutton
Larry or Jean Harman, 1749 Hwy 221, Dutton

Along with the family history we would like a few family photos such as wedding or family groups.  Professional photos have to be released by the photographer because of copyright laws.  Also if you have interesting photos of the Dutton or Collins area we would like to include them.

Dave Klette has been downloading photos to the computer and cataloging them so there is no chance of losing your prize photos.  He will be at the Dutton Senior Center on Nov. 7, 2008 from about 9:00AM until about 2:00PM to do more downloading on a first come first serve basis.

If it would be more convenient,  send photos or stories by email  to klette@tetonwireless.net.  When scanning the photos move the resolution up to 200DPI or 300DPI and even higher for small photos and send in the Jpeg format.  We cannot use photo copied pictures and would prefer a scan of  original prints.

Thank you, Dave Klette

It’s been a while since I checked in, but the trials and speed of parenthood sometimes plop-down in the path of our best-laid plans.  Reports from out west tell me that Fun Day was a success. Congratulations to those who had the time and location to enjoy it. Now I suppose harvest is almost over and preparations for seeding are underway.  An overcast Sunday, yesterday’s rain, and a visit to the grandparents house have given my wife and I a bit of time to catch-up on the hobbies we forgot we each enjoy.

What Are Dutton's Urban Legends, and Where Did All the Nicknames Come From?

by Lynn Habel
Dutton Country Courier

In discussion about many of the fun things that have been done by and to various fun loving people in this town, some of us have decided we need a section on the history of Dutton that includes all the pranks pulled in this area.

Some ones we have heard that come to mind involve: railroad tracks, cow pies, syphoned gas, pigs, chickens, farm equipment and of course, outhouses.  Names come to mind of Greaseball, Emma, Millie, Stan, Mike Weeks, Art, Jan and too many others to name.

We would like to get the stories straight so are asking anyone with the correct information to email, mail or talk to Collette Willson: collettewlsn@yahoo.com or Lynn Habel: lynnhabel@yahoo.com or mail to us at box 324, Dutton, Mt 59433. Verna Schluter and Cathy Odden are also collecting stories, so you may contact them as well.

We are also interested in how people got their nicknames.  Dutton is known worldwide as the town where everyone has a nickname.

Thank You to Those Who Made Fun Day Auction A Success

By Peg Doheny
Dutton Country Courier

The silent auction at this year's Fun Day brought in bids by the droves, with some people bidding until the final moment. The auction, often a big draw during the day, was once again a success, so a big thank you is in order for the generous individuals & business that donated items and of course to the "winners" of auction items for their purchases.

Also, thank you to the wonderful crew of the auction, including those who collected, set up, made out bid sheets, helped to close the auction and the crews that put up the stands and take them back down again.

These are the people that help make Fun Day and the Auction a success.

Thanks again to all and see you next year, Dutton's 100th birthday celebration.

Hugs, Peg Doheny and Crew
